Microenterprise failure and the individual characteristics of the owner: an empirical study in the Dominican Republic

Abstract


The purpose of this paper is to analyze the explanatory causes of microenterprise failure from the perspective of theowner’s personal characteristics such as gender, age, level of experience and education. For this, an empirical study with 1.679 microenterprises in the Dominican Republic was conducted. The results show that the causes of failureare linked tothe demographics of theowner, such as gender, age, and education.The female owners and younger owner swith less education are more proneto failurein the developmentof their business.These results have important implications for both entrepreneurs and for public organizations in order to streng then their competitiveness and achieve survival.
